[Cnidaria] A minute canal or duct leading from the stomach of a medusa upwards to the outside; during early development, it provides continuity between the hydroid coelenteron and that of the medusa; typically performing no function after release of the medusa from the hydroid and, in most species, soon closes up (sometimes the apical canal is called apical duct or umbilical canal).
