Diagnosis
Carapace moderately to extremely (laterally) compressed. The rostrum is shorter than the peduncle of the eye. The ventral flagellum of the antennule is modified or absent. pereiopods 4 and 5 reduced or absent. Pleurobrachia absent. Thoracic segment with never more than two branchiae on each side; no more than seven or eight well developed branchiae on each side.
Comprises the Family Luciferidae and Family Sergestidae, only the latter may be present in the North Sea with Sergia robusta and Sergestes arcticus.
