Subclassis Prosobranchia

Milne Edwards, 1848

Description
— Larva. Veliger larva with right-coiled shell; velum simple or multilobed. Shell of older veligers with up to five whorls, shell often sculptured. Larva variously pigmented or not. [After Hadfield, 1964].
— Adults. Gastropods displaying torsion, with marked subsequent modification of the anterior mantle cavity. Respiration conducted via single (primitively paired) gill within the mantle cavity. Head with pronounced snout, tentacles, and eyes. Shell usually coiled, often massively developed; in a few cases the shell is cup-shaped or tubular. Foot with planar sole and typically with corneous or calcareous operculum. Feeding and reproductive modes highly varied. Mostly marine; benthic, occurring abundantly from the supralittoral to the abyss. Most primitive group of the gastropods, from which the other types, the opisthobranchs and pulmonates have been derived. [After Hayward et al., 1990; Graham, 1988; Brusca and Brusca, 1990].
