Family characters
Inner shell reduced to chitinous gladius or absent. Mantle short, broad and sac-like. Body rounded; fins paired, large, round, lateral, not extending whole length of body, not meeting posteriorly. Mantle-funnel locking cartilage is simple and straight. Male with left, or both left and right, dorsal hectocotylous arm.
