Description
Umbrella bell-shaped, higher than wide; jelly thick [Coryne producta ]; velum moderately broad. Four radial canals and ring canal narrow. Usually with a conical apical chamber.
Manubrium cylindrical, about as long as bell cavity; when fully stretched, about 1/3 of manubrium is extended beyond umbrella margin. Mouth circular, simple.
Gonads continuous, completely surrounding manubrium. Four perradial marginal tentacles with irregularly scattered nematocyst clusters and a terminal nematocyst cluster. Each marginal tentacle bulb with a well-developed ocellus.
Size
Umbrella up to 10 mm high and 7 mm wide.
Colour
Terminal nematocyst cluster of tentacles and tentacle bulbs reddish; ocelli black or deep brown.
Ecology and depth range
Neritic. A young medusa was taken in the plankton at Helgoland in May.
Distribution in the North Sea
Southern and northern North Sea, W English Channel.
World distribution
N Atlantic Ocean, including Mediterranean Sea; W South Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans.
