Description
Umbrella hemispherical to conical [Ptychogastria polaris ]; exumbrella with 16 radiating ridges; velum very wide.
Manubrium about half as long as bell cavity, with eight lateral lobes above; with eight mesenterial positions; mouth with four lips.
Sixteen gonads on sides of manubrial lobes.
Tentacles in up to about 48 clusters, tentacles solid, each cluster with three filiform tentacles and numerous tentacles with adhesive discs; 16 statocysts.

Size
Umbrella 18 to 22 mm wide.

Ecology and depth range
Meropelagic; neritic.

Distribution in the North Sea
Along Norwegian coast as far south as Bergen.

World distribution
Circumpolar, Arctic and Antarctic.

Remark
Polyp stage absent.
