Description
Pereiopods 1-4 of the male and 1-3 of the female provided with well developed exopodites. Distal end of the basis of maxilliped 3 little or not at all prolonged. Eyes well developed.
Adult male with a smooth carapace, without teeth; antennal notch shallow. The last pleonite projecting backwards between the uropods and with its hind border serrated but these not always apparent. Flagellum of antenna 2 short, scarcely reaching beyond pereionite 5.
Female with a median dorsal toothed crest on the carapace, composed of two parallel rows of small teeth. The antennal notch is deeper and serrated with a pronounced anterolateral angle below it. The eyelobe is well developed and strongly pigmented.
No free telson.

Size
Length of male up to about 5 mm; female up to 6 mm.

Ecology
Shelf.

Depth range
In shallow water down to about 40 m on sand or coarse bottoms. Males attracted to light at night.

Distribution in the North Sea
Northern North Sea.

World distribution
Round the south and west coasts of the British Isles. Also extending to the coast of Morocco and into the Mediterranean and recorded from South Vietnam and South Africa.
