Description
Pseudorostrum horizontal, conical. Female carapace with a double row of forward-pointing denticles down the middle of the frontal lobe and usually some scattered denticles on the sides, sometimes forming imperfect transverse rows across the frontal area. Eye small but with lenses. Pereionite 5 with posterolateral corners acute, strongly produced backwards. Telson about as long as or a little longer than the uropod peduncles with 10-15 or sometimes more pairs of lateral spines. Pereiopod 1 with basis little longer than rest of appendage, with denticles on the side of its distal part; carpus and propodus about equal in length and a little longer than the dactyl. Pereiopod 2 with dactyl not much longer than propodus, the carpus much longer than both together.
Male carapace without denticles except on and near the front of the carinae, which on either side curve to run round parallel to the lower margin.
Telson long, postanal part narrowed, with several pairs of lateral spines.

Size
Length up to 22 mm, but usually smaller.

Ecology
Deeper shelf and slope.

Depth range
About 10 to 250 m.

Distribution in the North Sea
Southern and northern North Sea, Skagerrak.

World distribution
The subspecies typica occurs on the coasts of North-West Europe from the southern North Sea and the Irish Sea to Norway.
